Iranian director Jafar Panahi has been banned from writing screenplays, making films and giving interviews for 20 years, but the circumstances of his house arrest make this his richest, strongest (non-)film so far, says Xan Brooks

Don’t be fooled by that title: this is a film, and an extremely good one at that. It’s intended as a satirical barb aimed at the oppressive Iranian authorities who banned lauded native director Jafar Panahi from filmmaking for 20 years, believing his work to be a major destabilising threat to the current political regime.

Rough and ready, but also innovative and very clever. This Is Not A Film directed by Jafar Panahi, Mojtaba Mirtahmasb and starring Jafar Panahi.

The title is a put-on, like the Magritte painting of a pipe.

This is a film, of sorts, but more pertinently it's a sly act of defiance from a film-maker who's slipped tyranny's gag. Jafar Panahi, the brilliant Iranian director of Offside and The Circle, was given a six-year prison sentence and a 20-year ban from film-making after he pledged his support to the opposition party in Iran's 2009 election.
