Famous People Who Have Supported Imprisoned Iranian Filmmaker
Susan Sarandon ( born October 4, 1946) is an American actress. She has worked in films and television since 1969, and won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in the 1995 film Dead Man Walking. She had also been nominated for the award for four films before that and has received other recognition for her work. She is also noted for her social and political activism for a variety of liberal causes.
Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi has recieved support from many in the world of film. Panahi has not actually commited a crime. Panahi spoke out against his country's oppresive government. He is now serving a six year prison sentence and is banned from making films for twenty years. Renowned documentary filmmaker Mojtaba Mirtahmasb, co-director of banned Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi's latest film, is among six movie makers arrested by Iranian authorities. The Appeal Court sentenced renowned filmmaker Mohammad Rassulof, who was arrested with Panahi in March 2010, to one year’s imprisonment.
